Tyneside Memorial Cross at the Lochnagar Mine Crater La Boisselle Somme France

Tyneside Memorial Cross. The wooden cross was placed at the crater in 1986. The wooden beams are from the roof of a de-consecrated church near Durham in England. The origins of the wooden beams are significant as many of the British soldiers killed here on 1st July during the attack on the German Front Line were men from Tyne side in the north-east of England. Many of them miners, they were recruited to form several battalions in the regiment of the Northumberland Fusiliers
The Lochnagar Crater has been privately owned since 1978 permission is required from the owners to publish this image .Please contact us for details.
